Font combinations for all your designs If your font combinations have long felt like the Kobayashi Maru test, then you've come to the right place. Having the right font pairings is a hugely important element of any stunning design, and they shouldn't feel like an impossible task—quite the opposite. In this post, we will introduce you to the basic know-how behind font combinations and provide you with many examples of font combinations for every occasion. Fonts vs. Typefaces Contrasting font pairs Vidaloka + Roboto (serif and sans serif font) Oswald + Raleway (sans serif fonts) Playfair Display + Cormorant (serif fonts) As you can see, contrasting fonts can exist within the same font family. So, whether you're making menus, birthday invitations, or planning a professional event, contrasting fonts can add variety to your design and create intrigue. However, just like you probably wouldn't mix cinnamon and dill, some fonts don't mix. Matching fonts can be a matter of trial and error, but there are also several ways to ensure a more accurate match. For example, although there are contrasting pairs of fonts within the same family, serif and sans serif fonts also balance each other out. Using fonts in the same category can offer an enhanced visual effect. And keep in mind: more fonts usually don't make for better design. Two types is the gold standard, three and you're still in the safe zone. However, use four or more fonts in your design and things will start to look awkward. Now that you've got the basics down, let's introduce you to text tools. Serif: Fonts in this category have either a footer or a small flourish. They are perfect for a sophisticated look. Sans Serif: Sans = without, therefore without a footer or stroke. These fonts offer a clean and modern look. Handwriting: As the name suggests, handwriting fonts are designed to simulate handwriting. Because of this, each variation is clearly different. Font: When you think of handwritten fonts, let your mind turn to elegant or special occasions. They are perfect for wedding or shower invitations. Display: These fonts translate the show as it runs. They are often large and bold, designed to attract attention. Monospace: Think of monospace fonts as an homage to old typewriters. Use one of these and you can expect your text to have an old school or classic look.
